In 1905 Einstein presented his Relativity to the world, since then the potential of nuclear physics and the power of the 92nd element has dominated the course of military development. Meanwhile Neils Bohr gave us quantum mechanics which lead to consumer electronics. Two divergent paths commenced. In one world nuclear superpowers were formed and surrounded themselves with the lesser powers into the UN Security Council and it has governed and shaped the modern world. In the other world, computers were developed at an increasing rate governed only by Moore’s Law so far, that processing power would double every 2 years and this technology governed our economies. In a post nuclear world, devolved back to conventional warfare, the two branches of technology, consumer electronics (i.e. the machines we have available to hand) and the might of military research are set to come back together. Currently, the new arms race is about projecting research and development of existing conventional technology into machines that can enforce political will. Instead of remote satellites and warheads which cannot be seen save for their influence, we will begin to see the development of technology we use everyday at a spectacular rate1 . Hypersonic travel, Unmanned Air Vehicles, electric hybrid cars and planes and air vehicles, with amazing data transfer capabilities and the networking of conventional technologies. One of the best examples of this would be the recent trials at NASA of the Hypersonic Jets that will not only go on to military use but are eagerly awaited to re-open Supersonic Jet Travel only this time for the masses and not just the lucky few in the case of Concorde. Concorde's a great example, it was the

product of government co-operation between countries rather than a military project with clear commercial benefits.

DefenceIntegration.org was borne out of these changes and serves to highlight this changing world of defence and the way it will affect all of our lives. The conventional machines we use everyday for transport, communication and labour saving are about to be upgraded into the vehicles and machines of the future; electronic, miniaturised, hybridised and networked. The world will benefit, but how? Our ability to enforce our will on the world which is the true meaning of defence is about to come a step closer to the people.

1Examples of these rapid developments are the Connaught Hybrid Unit being supplied to the military but also useful for larger civilian automotive applications (Autumn www.Vehicletechnology.org, This was never the case with nuclear weapons, for which there was never co-funding for a military and civilian application. Another example is the SAE-International lead development of the Unified Armament Interface – a standard – which provides a software platform like Windows for the programming of Weapons Integration (programming a missile to work from a platform such as a plane etc.) SAE-International’s UAI is a massive step forward in terms of cost and time saving to the World’s Militaries.
