Multipart Defence has been successfully managing the
supply chain for Challenger 2 tank spares since July 2000,
supporting armoured regiments in barracks in the UK
and Germany, on training exercises in Poland and
Canada, and on operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq.
CRISP, the Challenger 2 Innovative Spares Provision contract was a
groundbreaking concept in 2000, and remains a benchmark for contractor
logistics support in 2008. This was the first of the new style CLS
contracts to involve Battle-Winning Equipment; the first to involve
direct delivery to armoured units; and the first to embed a contractor’s
IT into the MoD Supply Operations Centre. As sub-contractor to BAE
Systems, Multipart effectively took over the end to end supply chain from demand forecasting to delivery: functions previously performed
by the MoD themselves.
“This was a big step for both Multipart and MoD” Managing Director
Chris Gateley explained, “we knew we could manage commercial
supply chains, but this was the first time our capabilities and systems would be, quite literally, battle-tested.” |

Multipart took custody of MoD’s Challenger 2 inventory, and responsibility
for planning, and funding that inventory going forward to
maintain spares availability.
Proving Chris Gateley’s and MoD’s faith in the company’s capabilities,
Multipart’s inventory now stands at just £1.5m, compared to MoD’s
historic figure of £15m. At the same time, availability has increased by
an impressive 27% and delivery lead times have reduced by at least
90%. Tank units benefit from a consistent 96% availability, delivered in
full and on time, and the Treasury benefits from a £13.5m reduction in
Government funding. Great news for both the front line and the back
office!
Major Lee Rickard who has overseen the contract as MoD Heavy
Armour Systems Integrated Project Team Leader, said “This contract
shows that the private and public sector can work closely together to
make a major difference to front-line operations and reduce tax payers’ |
